The main costs of any funeral are usually those paid for the funeral director’s services. Funeral director’s costs will vary from company to company, but in Scotland are typically around £1,500 to £2,500. The funeral director fees will include all administration, collection, and mortuary services, as well as a team of bearers and a hearse on the day of the funeral.
These vary depending on the area, but in Scotland are typically from £660 to £1,100
Burial costs vary depending on location, but typically cost more than a cremation. There is usually a cost to purchase the Right of Burial in a plot, as well as an interment fee and grave digger’s fees.
There may also be an extra cost if a headstone needs to be removed for the burial to take place.
A budget coffin typically costs around £350, but if a different coffin is preferred, then expect to pay around £400 – £500 for cardboard, £500 – £850 for solid wood, £500- £800 for wicker, bamboo or banana leaf, and upwards of £1500 for a casket.
If used, there will be a small fee for a funeral service held in a church. There may also be a fee for the use of an organist.
If you do not wish to have a religious service, you may want to engage the services of a celebrant to help pull a service together and conduct it on the day. Celebrant costs vary but expect to pay around £200
The use of a hearse for the deceased is usually included in the funeral directors charges, but if additional limousines are required for family members, then you can expect to pay an additional £350 per car for this.
There may be a cost associated with returning cremated remains to a family, or with interment or scattering of ashes.
Prices of memorials will vary depending on the type of stone and the style you use. Expect to pay from between £1,500 to £3,000 for a full size headstone, with memorial plaques being considerably cheaper. The cost of the inscription will be additional to the cost of the stone, and there may be an additional charge for the placement of the stone as well as any permits the cemetery may require
A modest spray of flowers or a wreath will typically cost around £40. A full coffin top may be upwards of £250
Order of Service cards typically cost around £50 to £120
A death notice may cost in the area of £50 to £100
Typical costs for a wake (gathering after the funeral) usually include venue hire and catering costs.
These are the simplest form of funeral, as well as the least expensive, as they do away with almost all of the additional costs associate with a traditional funeral.
Direct funerals are mostly cremations (some funeral directors do offer direct burials but these are not so common) and are unattended by family members, so there is no service held at the time of the funeral. The total price for a direct cremation in Scotland, inclusive of all crematorium costs, ranges from around £800 to £1500
